raised fist

Solidarity and resistance — a raised clenched fist expressing unity, strength, and defiance against oppression. A general symbol of solidarity with a cause, and a legitimate political emblem, not a hate symbol.

Labour and socialist emblem — of trade unionism, anarchism, communism and antifascism since the 1910s; formalised by groups like Germany's Roter Frontkämpferbund (1924) and used as the "anti-fascist salute" in the Spanish Civil War.

Black Power / human-rights salute — the fist raised by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics during the US anthem. Smith later called it "a human rights salute." Associated with the Black Power movement and Black Panther Party.

Black Lives Matter / racial justice — contemporary use of the raised fist in anti-racist protest and demonstrations.

Feminist empowerment — a raised fist set inside the Venus symbol, designed by Robin Morgan for a 1969 Miss America pageant protest, became a women's-liberation emblem.
